Scrum enables people, teams, and organizations to create value by solving complex challenges in an adaptive manner.

Scrum Artifacts

Scrum artifacts are used by a scrum team and stakeholders to capture key information, describe the product being developed, the steps and actions taken to build it during the project. Scrum artifacts keep everyone in the team on the same page as they work toward the sprint goal.

The three main scrum artifacts as defined in the Scrum guide:

Product backlog: Product backlog contains the list of items needed in a product and is constantly evolving. The product backlog divides the product into a dynamic list of required components, such as features, enhancements, and fixes.

Sprint backlog: The sprint backlog is a collection of items from the product backlog that have been prioritized for development in the following product increment. These are well refined and have all the necessary details that help developers track down their daily progress on the project. Associating with the sprint backlog, the development team defines a sprint goal and works together to achieve it.

Increment: The collection of product backlog tasks performed during a sprint is called an increment. It also incorporates all prior sprint increments. Every increment should meet the criteria of completion, as well as be thoroughly tested and authorized.

Scrum Ceremonies

Scrum ceremonies are an essential element of Agile development; they provide the teams a structure to get work done systematically, assist teams in anchoring expectations, collaborate successfully, and ultimately generate results.

1. Sprint planning: Sprint planning aims to determine what can be accomplished in a given sprint and how the team will do it. The scrum master facilitates the meeting, and the product owner describes the sprint's objectives, task priorities, and what backlog items contribute to it.

Who all attend sprint planning? Development team, product owner, and scrum master

Duration of sprint planning: Sprint planning is generally organized for 4 hours for a two weeks sprint. Sprint Planning is limited to 8 hours for a four weeks sprint.

2. Daily stand-up: Daily stand-ups are one of the fundamental parts of Agile development. The purpose of daily stand-up is to swiftly update everyone on what's going on in the team. In the usual sense, this isn't a status meeting. The daily stand-ups are a fast catch-up to update the rest of the team on each member's progress and requirements.

Who all attends the stand-up? The development team is required to attend every daily scrum. The Scrum Master usually is present, but it is not mandatory.

Duration of stand-up: Daily stand-ups are limited to 15 mins per day.

3. Sprint review: Sprint review is one of the crucial ceremonies where the team gathers to review the completed tasks, demonstrate progress, and get immediate feedback from the project stakeholders. The team adapts the product backlog based on the inputs from the stakeholders and will work on it in the next sprints.

Who all attend sprint review? The development team, scrum master, product owner, stakeholders, any associated departments can be invited for feedbacks.

Duration of sprint review: It can be 2 hours for a two weeks Sprint.

4. Sprint retrospective: The sprint retrospective is a recurrent meeting held at the end of a sprint cycle to assess successful upshots and discuss revisions for the next sprint cycle. The sprint retrospectives are not about complaining and holding each other responsible for the pitfalls but finding creative solutions and developing an action plan for future processes.

Who all attend sprint retrospective? Development team, scrum master, and the product owner. Product owners can join but aren't mandatory attendees.

Duration of sprint retrospective: A sprint retrospective can be for 90 minutes for two weeks long sprints.

In summary, Scrum ceremonies and artifacts are crucial to the agile methodology and software development process. These practices are intended to assist teams and organizations, helps teams stay agile, and improve through practicing these ceremonies and artifacts.
ONE BCGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03129212463971654383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2327372897369533194.post-67417288247807194442021-09-10T11:30:00.017+05:302021-09-10T16:06:34.400+05:30Understanding agile mindset | ONE BCG

The agile mindset is a thoughtful process that incorporates understanding, cooperating, learning, and remaining flexible to generate high-performing results. This method makes it easier for teams adapting to change rather than resisting it.

Having an agile mindset:

An agile mindset is defined as a person's readiness to deal with failure by learning from it and modifying and adjusting to prevent repeating the collapse, which is crucial in the Agile journey. Having an agile mindset entails being flexible enough to respond to changing circumstances. Before using Agile methodologies, one must first embrace and accept an agile attitude or mindset.

Valuing people: It's easy to understand why people are valued more highly than processes or tools because people respond to the needs of a business and stimulate the development process. In a high-performance culture, people are motivated, and the collaboration is high, resulting in building amazing products and successful organizations.

Learning culture: True Agile learning culture encourages an open mind, a self-directed desire for knowledge, and flexible learning to continually improve. The process of creating an agile learning culture entails evaluating big and taking modest steps toward gradually scaling up. Eventually, the team will acquire a robust, agile learning culture and manage anything, including opportunities, progressions, and even setbacks.

Responding to change: The phrase "responding to change over following a plan" is essential. Responding to change necessitates an inner transformation. If done correctly, we can make plans, but we can also change when the situation requires it, resulting in better results.

Developing an agile mindset

Customer is a priority: The primary purpose of being agile is to provide value and quality to the customers. As a result, project teams must understand clients' requirements and adjust and react fast to client feedback to ensure continuous improvement and upgrading of projects. Essentially, constant feedbacks facilitates businesses to provide added value to customers.

Define clear objectives: To cultivate an Agile mindset, the team must first establish all the clear accomplishments and goals that must meet within a specific time limit. After establishing the intended goal, the team may plan and implement the tasks to help them achieve it.

Practice critical thinking: Problem-solving and agility both require critical thinking. Being able to think critically is a significant asset in the agile mindset, which is oriented toward building a team that can quickly adapt to change as it occurs.

Communicate & collaborate: Collaboration and communication are two of the essential parts of developing an Agile mindset in a team. The members of the team should seize every opportunity to encourage teamwork. Team members will be able to learn more about their coworkers in this manner.

Bring transparency: To advance the transparency aspect, one must be held accountable and share responsibility. This is because Agile is, at its core, a collaborative endeavor. Transparency boosts morale and encourages team members to communicate and collaborate more effectively. Employees are more likely to place their faith in their superiors once trust has been established. As a result, a harmonious relationship between team members and management is promoted.

Learning from past incidents: There's no doubting that human error can have dire consequences. Instead of continuing the lapses, one should use them as a bridge to a greater learning experience. The teams should learn from past missteps and implement to improve their procedures and strategies. The practice is about being receptive and acknowledging each opportunity to develop proficiency and knowledge.

Conclusion: Being agile entails anticipating future challenges, dealing with risks, and as a result, thinking through the best solutions. Trying to be Agile is a way of life that one cannot disregard in today's environment. Having an Agile Mindset involves focusing on adding value from the start and working collaboratively with others to achieve a common goal and continuous advancement.
ONE BCGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03129212463971654383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2327372897369533194.post-67794232046319650342021-07-30T14:32:00.004+05:302021-08-06T15:12:21.301+05:30Chargeback prevention alerts: How they work & prevent chargebacks | ONE BCG

Prevention alert is a notification system for merchants in which a customer contacts their issuing bank to dispute a chargeback, and the information is transmitted to the merchant.

Chargeback management includes preventing chargebacks as well as resolving any unlawful transaction disputes that occur. Cloud computing is one such technology that has achieved success in the industry, but numerous misconceptions around it are considered facts.

Despite its competitive advantage and advancement, cloud computing is nevertheless subject to many misinterpretations—these misconceptions revolve around the security structure, usage, organization size, advantages, and implementation cost.

Cloud is always about money: Cloud computing’s pay-as-you-go model helps prevent needless spending on infrastructure. With optimization over time, cloud computing will save a substantial percentage of operating costs.
It depends on various factors, including the amount of data you store, the number of users and applications you have, and your backup requirements. The cloud excels at easily scaling to your needs, allowing you to pay only for the computing resources you need.

Once I have moved to the cloud, I am done: There are many ways to get to the cloud, ranging from simple rehosting, usually via infrastructure as a service, to a full switch to software as a -[service (SaaS) program. Cloud computing is both a business model and a technology. Organizations that succeed in the cloud change their business processes to use cloud principles fully.

It's hard to make changes to cloud infrastructure: When making changes to a conventional network, the IT team must usually go to each workstation and make the changes manually, which can take hours, days, or even weeks, depending on the size of your business. You can install software and updates in the cloud and make seamless improvements to all corresponding workstations via the Internet even more easily when you use cloud computing.

It's hard to hold control over Cloud: Many companies worry that if they don't have on-site equipment, they won't access their data and applications whenever they want. However, the exact opposite is true. In reality, cloud storage allows companies to access their data at any time and, more importantly, from any place.

Migration to the Cloud causes extended downtime: There's a reason why the proverb "time is money" is so well-known. Regardless of its business, geography, scale, or design, no organization can afford more than the bare minimum of downtime. On the other hand, Cloud migration does not have to imply a loss of time and resources.
In reality, most common cloud service providers provide smooth, live migration, resulting in minimal downtime if the current servers are outdated.

Cloud Computing is less secure than on-premise: The threat of a data breach or cyberattack is one of the first questions posed by cloud skeptics as a case against it. However, most experts believe that cloud storage is much more secure than an on-premises data center. Cloud technologies not only have the necessary infrastructure, but they're also managed by some of the world's best security experts who work for cloud service providers.

IT staff's jobs are at stake: Many IT professionals claimed their careers were in trouble as the cloud grew in popularity. If a company transferred it to the cloud, they will no longer need IT personnel. The idea, however, has not come to a realization. The internet is a weapon, and the cloud is one of them. People with strong IT skills are necessitated to prepare, execute, and track it. Instead of installing Windows Server upgrades, the IT staff focuses on more strategic goals and tasks thanks to the cloud.

Cloud multitenancy puts data at risk: Multitenant public cloud environments manage various users' cloud data on the same server. This can seem to be risky since it appears that other users may have access to their data. In fact, cloud providers partition data to limit access to information to the user who uploads it. Although no cloud environment can be completely stable, multitenant cloud environments are no more risky than other storage types.

Multi-cloud will prevent vendor lock-in: Most businesses begin with one cloud provider, but as they become worried about being too reliant on that vendor, they begin to consider using another. This is referred to as multi-cloud. A functionality-based approach to multi-cloud is also possible.

Cloud can not be used for mission-critical services: Recent advances in IT security for the cloud have changed things. The cloud can now be the best place to store your company's mission-critical data, offering various benefits over an on-premises solution, including cost savings and management ease.

Final note

Understanding what the future holds for cloud computing is important for businesses at all levels, as the cloud is no longer only for techies. Managers leverage the cloud's real opportunities to develop new business models, improve customer relationships, and harness employees' and partners' expertise. The cloud has progressed from an originally applied platform for resiliency and cost savings to businesses' creative powerhouses.
ONE BCGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03129212463971654383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2327372897369533194.post-74875370165041174072021-02-17T19:04:00.006+05:302021-03-16T13:06:05.451+05:30Cloud Computing: How it works & its use cases | ONE BCG

Cloud computing refers to hosted services offered over the internet. The stress of losing valuable data has been experienced by everyone who owns a computer. Cloud hosting provides an easily accessible storage option to keep the files & data secured.

Big data analytics: Using big data to learn trends and observations was a rambling and costly process before the cloud arrived. The cloud has eliminated the requirement for in-house development resources when gathering and analyzing data.

Communication to collaboration: From calendar to Gchat, the whole Google suite of apps is cloud-based. Besides, common apps such as Skype and WhatsApp are also popular, and both empower individuals on a global scale to connect and collaborate.

Test and development: The cloud's versatility allows ecosystems to be swiftly built up, checked, and torn down. The cloud's flexibility ensures that the organization is more competitive, and it is possible to cut down on time to market for new technologies.

Disaster recovery: In case of disaster, cloud computing has been the most cost-effective & durable option for businesses to secure and recover their data & assets. It is done through cloud-based backup and recovery services.

All sizes of organizations and industries are shifting to cloud services as cloud computing provides an abundance of advantages, especially for business organizations, by enabling them to improve their services' competitiveness, cost-effectiveness, and productivity.
ONE BCGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03129212463971654383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2327372897369533194.post-15380897686998763392021-02-03T18:12:00.004+05:302021-02-11T15:03:46.492+05:30Cloud Computing: architecture & its benefits | ONE BCG

Cloud computing is the distribution, usually over the internet and on a pay-as-you-go basis, of on-demand computing services—from software to storage and processing power.

For various reasons, including cost savings, increased productivity, speed and efficiency, performance, and security, cloud storage is a common choice for people and businesses.

How cloud computing works:

Cloud computing is defined because the information obtained is found remotely in the cloud or a virtual space. Cloud service providers allow users to store files and software on remote servers and then access all data through the Internet.

One advantage of using cloud computing services is that businesses can escape the immediate expense and difficulty of owning and managing their own IT infrastructure and pay for what they need by using it instead.

Key takeaways

The distribution of various services via the Internet, including data storage, servers, databases, networking, and applications, is cloud computing.

Cloud-based storage allows files to be stored on a remote disc and accessed on demand.

Services may be both public and private, whereas private services are hosted on a network for individual users, and public services are offered online with some fee.

Types of cloud services

Cloud computing is a system that consists mainly of three services: software-as-a-service (SaaS), infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), and platform-as-a-service (PaaS).

Software-as-a-service (SaaS): Software as a service is a system for delivering software applications over the Internet, on-demand, and usually on a subscription basis. With SaaS, cloud providers host and operate the software application and underlying infrastructure and manage any maintenance.

Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS): As part of on-demand infrastructure, it provides a mechanism for delivering anything from operating systems to servers and storage via IP-based networking. In an outsourced, on-demand service, clients may eliminate the need to buy software or servers and procure these services instead. Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure are typical examples of the IaaS framework.

Platform-as-a-service (PaaS): Out of the three layers of cloud-based computing, it is considered the most complex. PaaS has some similarities with SaaS; the critical difference is that it is merely a platform for developing software distributed via the Internet instead of delivering software online. This model includes platforms like AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Openshift.

Top benefits of cloud computing

Cloud computing is a massive transition from the conventional way corporations think of IT resources. Here are seven different reasons organizations are moving to cloud computing services:

Cost: Cloud storage eliminates the capital cost of purchasing hardware and software operating on-site data centers, server racks, power & IT experts for infrastructure management.

Security: A wide range of policies, technologies, and controls are provided by many cloud providers that improve overall security posture and protect the data, apps, and infrastructure from potential threats.

Speed: Most cloud computing services provide speed: Self-service and on-demand, but even huge volumes of computing resources can be provided in less time, gives organizations compliance, and takes off the burden of capacity planning.

Productivity: Usually, on-site data centers need a lot of "racking and stacking"-hardware configuration and other IT management activities that usually takes much time. It helps IT teams to attain more relevant business objectives by removing such a need for these activities.

Global Scale: Cloud computing services' advantages include the ability to scale elastically. This means having the right amount of IT resources in the cloud, such as more or less processing capacity, storage, bandwidth, right when needed.

Reliability: Cloud storage makes it simpler and less costly for data backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity.

Performance: Cloud provides many advantages over a single corporate datacenter, including reduced network latency and more significant scale economies.

The architecture of cloud computing

Cloud computing architecture is a blend of service-oriented architecture and event-driven architecture, which is distributed into two parts -

Front End: The customer uses the front end. It involves client-side interfaces and applications that are required to access the platforms of cloud computing. Web servers, thin & fat browsers, laptops, and handheld devices are part of the front end.

Back End: The service provider uses the back end. It manages all the resources necessary for cloud storage services to be offered. It requires a large amount of data storage, encryption systems, virtual machines, templates, servers, traffic control mechanisms, and so forth.

Components of cloud computing architecture

Management Software: Management is used to maintain and configure components such as application, service, runtime cloud, storage, infrastructure.

Hypervisor: Hypervisor is a firmware that acts as a virtual machine manager. Its main objective is to divide and designate resources & maintain guest operating systems in the cloud.

Deployment Software: It consists of all the necessary installations and configurations required to operate a cloud service. Three different models SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, can be deployed using the deployment software.

Network: It is a flexible, secure, virtual server hosted on the cloud computing platform. It connects the front-end and back-end and customizes the route and protocol.

Cloud Storage: Cloud storage provides a large-scaled storage capacity to manage & store the data. Data can be retrieved & modified from cloud storage in case of resource failure.

Cloud computing architecture provides an environment where organizations can create applications securely and use cloud resources based on customer requirements. Each iteration consists of sprints of two to four weeks, where each sprint aims first to develop the most critical features and come out with a product that can be delivered. More features are integrated into the product in subsequent sprints and are changed based on stakeholder and consumer input between sprints.

There are some advantages of the Agile Scrum methodology. First, it encourages products to be created faster since each set of targets must be achieved within each sprint's time. It also needs regular preparation and setting goals, which allows the scrum team to concentrate on the current sprint goals and improve efficiency.

What is scrum?

In short, Scrum refers to a process that makes teams collaborating on complex goods successful partnerships. While development teams most commonly use the Scrum, it can essentially be useful for any team working towards a common goal. In particular, Scrum is a series of meetings, tasks, and instruments that work together to help teams coordinate and handle their workload better.

Who can benefit from scrum?

Scrum can benefit an extensive blend of businesses and projects; these are the most probable recipients of it:

Complicated projects: Scrum methodology is ideal for projects that demand teams to close a backlog.

Companies that value results: Scrum is also advantageous to companies that value results over the processes that have documented progress.

Companies that cater to customers: Scrum can help organizations build products according to their terms & preferences.

What are the benefits of agile scrum methodology?

Here are some of the collective benefits of agile scrum methodology:

Flexibility and adaptability

Creativity and innovation

Lower costs

Quality improvement

Organizational synergy

Employee satisfaction

Customer satisfaction

The most significant advantage of the agile scrum approach is its versatility. The product owner determines product expectations, records changes to the product, and administers a scrum backlog, a detailed and continuously updated to-do list for the scrum project.

Scrum team: A self-organized group of three to nine individuals with business, analytical skills to carry out the actual work, solve problems, and deliver products. Scrum team members self-manage activities and are collectively responsible for achieving the objectives of each sprint.

But why scrum?

The structure of the Scrum itself is simple. It is easy to understand the rules, objects, incidents, and functions. In reality, its semi-prescriptive approach helps eliminate the creation process's ambiguities while leaving businesses enough room to add their flavor to it.

The approach of shorter iterations, daily scrum meetings, sprint reports, and identifying a scrum master could be a challenging cultural transfer for a new team.

But, the long-term advantages surpass the initial learning curve. The success of Scrum in designing complicated hardware and software products across different sectors and verticals makes it a clear structure for a company to adopt.

ONE BCGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03129212463971654383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2327372897369533194.post-72603325086091985332021-01-06T13:31:00.005+05:302021-02-04T10:49:01.301+05:30Why is Agile Methodology winning? | ONE BCG

The Agile theory is a technique that facilitates constant iteration of development and testing during the project's software development lifecycle. In the Agile model, unlike the Waterfall model, all growth and testing practices are parallel.

In the traditional approach, the project manager is holding the project's controls; thus, others don't make significant decisions.

However, in agile methodology, everything is out there and transparent. The clients are actively involved throughout the development process.

Reasons why agile is the best way to manage a software development team

Flexibility: Flexibility is the cornerstone of a truly agile approach for growth. Since Agile uses short-term sprints and prototypes, space for errors & the opportunity to catch product improvement opportunities is directed into the technique. A framework that can continually update with evolving requirements and demands ensures real-time development.

Collaborative: The Agile Manifesto emphasizes the importance of people and experiences over processes and resources, stressing explicitly face-to-face communication as the most productive way to share information and collaboration between Agile teams. Efficient teamwork encourages teams to create workable solutions to difficult problems.

Transparent: Agile transparency builds on the ideals of Agile. These favor people and experiences over processes and instruments, software over detailed documentation, customer cooperation over contract negotiation, and reacting to a plan update.

Results-Oriented: Any development team aims to be results-oriented and value-driven. There is an approach to Agile transformation that drives the focus away from events, roles, and artifacts toward achieving outcomes that matter most to the organization.

Key factors to adopt agile

Enhances collaboration between teams - 54%

Increases the quality levels in the organizations - 52%

Increased customer satisfaction- 49%

Reduces cost of development - 42%

Many organizations have opted for Agile because it proves that agile adoption's primary motivators were improving team collaboration and increasing software quality and customer satisfaction.

When to use the agile model?

When new changes are required to be performed. Agile gives freedom to change, which is essential. It requires significantly less cost when recent changes are implemented because of the frequency of new additions produced.

The development team needs to spend only a few days or hours implementing a new feature.

Unlike the waterfall model, the Agile model requires very limited planning to get started with the project. Agile assumes that the end-users' demands are amplifying with time in the IT world. Changes and features can be newly implemented and removed based on the feedback.

Conclusion: Agile is a process that certainly matters about getting the task done. The capacity to work iteratively is one of the critical areas of focus for Agile teams. When project teams practice Agile, it makes one of the best ways to function in a community of continuous improvement.

ONE BCGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03129212463971654383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2327372897369533194.post-18662344309052313722020-12-23T12:37:00.006+05:302021-02-04T10:55:40.494+05:30Agile methodology: understanding its values & advantages | ONE BCG

Agile is an iterative approach to software development and project management that supports teams to deliver value to their customers faster and with less hassle. An agile team delivers work in small but consumable additions. There is a continuous evaluation of plans, requirements, and outcomes to have a natural & flexible mechanism for quickly responding to change.

Core values of the agile manifesto

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools - The first value underlines teamwork and cooperation. In the past, teams would concentrate on having the best possible tools or methods for development. But Agile Manifesto suggests that while tools are crucial, the people working behind the processes are even more significant.

Working software over extensive documentation - Documentation has its place for consumers and coworkers and can be a great resource. However, software development's primary goal is to create software that provides market advantages rather than comprehensive documentation.

Customer collaboration over contract negotiation - Agile principles require customers to be involved in all stages of the project. Teams must work together and be in regular engagement with their clients. If the customers are kept in the loop throughout the development process, team members can ensure that they meet all the client's requirements.

Responding to change over following a plan - Agile manifesto believes that changes always improve a project. Changes are a reality in Software development, which the Software process should reflect. A project plan must be flexible enough to change according to what the situation demands.

Why choose agile?

The agile method predicts change and allows for much more flexibility & adaptability than traditional methods. Clients can even make small changes in goals without making considerable alterations to the budget or schedule.

Agile advantages

Improved quality: One of the most significant benefits of an Agile methodology is improved product quality. By adopting Agile software development practices, organizations can provide timely solutions and customer satisfaction.

Focus on business value: The increased emphasis on delivering strategic business value by including business stakeholders in the development process is another of Agile's key advantages. The team knows what's crucial and can provide their organization with the most market value features.

Predictable costs and schedule: With Agile, the organizations can clearly understand the estimated cost for each feature, combined with the estimates given before each Sprint. It also enhances decision-making and the need for additional iterations throughout the process.

Allows for change: Although the teams have to remain focused on delivering an agreed-to subset of the product's features throughout each iteration, the Agile manifesto enables them to continuously optimize and refine the overall product backlog.

Transparency: Another advantage of agile software's implementation is that it offers a unique opportunity to include clients in the project journey & provide transparency. Involving them helps in prioritizing functionality, iteration preparation, testing sessions, etc.

Promotes RPA at scale: Finally, implementing an Agile approach to RPA programs is a crucial advantage because it encourages scale automation. Agile concepts such as dedicated teams, sprint preparation, backlog maintenance, etc., provide compliance and control for automation teams to regulate end-to-end processes on a scale at a pace.

Agile methodologies

Extreme programming: It is a platform that allows teams to build high-quality software & helps to enhance their course quality. It enables software development among acceptable engineering practices. Extreme programming is applicable when working with small, extended development teams and dealing with new software risks.

Kanban: It is a technique used to plan, monitor, and enhance the system flow. Kanban makes it possible for companies to imagine their workflow and restrict the amount of work in progress. Kanban is applicable where work arrives unpredictably without waiting for other work items, and it needs to be delivered immediately.

Lean: It is a collection of tools and concepts based on the detection and elimination of waste to speed up the process. It results in maximized value & reduced waste.

Scrum: Scrum is a process where teams construct a hypothesis, test it, focus on the experience, and make modifications. Depending on the requirements, it helps teams to combine activities from other systems. Scrum is used by cross-functional teams working on product creation, and the work is distributed into more than one iteration.

Crystal: Rather than on technologies and processes, crystal focuses on individuals and their experiences. Crystal operates on the premise that projects are unique and complex, seeking to streamline processes and maximize optimization. It is used to improve collaboration among teams, continuous integration, configurable processes, and users' active participation.

Conclusion: Agile is a robust framework, providing benefits to the development team & at the same level to the client, helping in achieving unified business objectives efficiently. Agile helps project teams deal with many of the most common project deadfalls in more controlled practice.

An Agile strategy works best in situations with a relatively high degree of ambiguity, where creativity and innovation are more critical than predictability to find the right answer.

ONE BCGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03129212463971654383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2327372897369533194.post-57915442533922551302020-12-01T13:06:00.011+05:302021-02-04T10:58:23.845+05:30The rise of Multi-Cloud computing | ONE BCG

Multi-Cloud adoption has been increasing year over year. It ensures that they are free of errors to a maximum degree. But QA testing is also prone to several unfortunate misconceptions, what it has to offer, what the process involves.

Because products must be functional and user-friendly, it is crucial to understand, emphasize, and value the importance of the process and the software testers.

Here are five common myths about QA Testing -

1. QA testing is easy

Contrary to what many people would like to believe, QA testing is not a simple task that can be performed by just anybody and demands a top-notch skill set. The skills that a QA software tester must possess:

Creativity

Critical-thinking

Communication

Attention to detail

Problem-solving

Analytical

These skills will come in handy while planning, developing and implementing tests and finding ways of bug reproduction and ‘break’ systems. An excellent QA tester possesses a combination of soft and hard skills that might be difficult to come across.

2. QA testers are unnecessary

Because people think that the process of software QA testing is easy, they also come to believe that professional QA testers are not significant. Some people also like to believe that QA services should not at all be included in the software development process. People need to understand that performing QA testing requires a unique skill set. Organizations must have dedicated QA testers to ensure that their products have negligible bugs.

It’s also important to know that QA and testing are not synonymous. QA involves carefully planned-out strategies that require a level of skill to test the product at different stages of development and implementation. Testing might be an essential part of quality assurance; it’s merely one tiny aspect of the process.

3. Testing ensures a bug-free product

QA testing does not guarantee the absolute absence of bugs, but merely disclose the presence of bugs in the software. Testing procedures are implemented to find and eliminate the maximum number of bugs in the software.

People must understand that, even with no time constraint and an unlimited budget, it is simply impossible to make a product entirely bug free. Many functional and final products will have a minimal number of bugs, but it does not imply that the software will not serve the requirements. Even the most skilled tester will not be able to guarantee that the software is bug-free. There is one thing which can be done that the bugs can be reduced to a minimum, and the software be determined as functional and usable.

4. Testing is for the non-tech-savvy

QA testers may not know how to code, but they must have a stronghold over technical skill. These skills include:

Creating a multitude of tests designed to break software and replicating errors.

Explain system errors to laymen as well as developers.

The phases and personnel involved are both necessary and complementary.

5. Human testers will become obsolete

As technologies such as artificial intelligence become more ubiquitous and ingrained in our everyday lives, many people fear that machines will replace their jobs. However, it’s unreasonable to assume that QA testing will become entirely automated.

Because unlike automated tests that can catch only the errors withing a product, human testers can assess not only the errors but also the usability, look, feel, and overall quality of the software. This is an integral part of testing: putting oneself in the shoes of a user to envision what kind of experience they will have when using the product. And that’s something a machine can’t do.

Why is QA testing necessary for software development?

The importance of QA testing in software development cannot be dispelled. Often, QA testing and the skills of testers are underemphasized. However, it’s essential to understand their role and eliminate the myths surrounding QA Testing because a company’s reputation depends on delivering products that are functional and usable, and that begins with quality assurance.

ONE BCG offers you both manual and automated testing.
Container orchestration is the automated arrangement, coordination, and management of software containers.

What is container orchestration used for?
Container orchestration is used to manage:

Deployment and provisioning

Scheduling and configuration

Resource allocation

Balancing workloads

Traffic routing

Container health management

Configuring applications

Keeping interactions between containers secure

If your current software infrastructure looks like this — maybe Apache + PHP/Python/Ruby/Node.js app running on a few containers that connect to a replicated DB — in such conditions, you will not require container orchestration, you can probably manage everything yourself.
What if your application keeps growing? And you keep adding functionalities. It becomes a vast monolith, and it becomes difficult to maintain and takes away too much CPU and RAM. Later, you finally decide to split your application into smaller chunks, each responsible for one specific task, supported by microservices.

Refined infrastructure now kind of looks like this:

You will now need a caching layer or a queuing system — to increase performance, process tasks, and share data between the services. In situations where you also might want to run multiple instances of each microservice spanning numerous servers to make it highly available in a production environment.

You now have to think about challenges like:

Service Discovery

Load Balancing

Secrets/configuration/storage management

Health checks

Auto-[scaling/restart/healing] of containers and nodes

Zero-downtime deploys

Container orchestration platforms are beneficial and powerful because they offer solutions for most of those challenges.

So what choices do we have? Today, the leading players are Kubernetes, AWS ECS, and Docker Swarm. Kubernetes has the largest community of users and is the most popular by a significant margin.
Kubernetes, an open-source platform for automated deployments, scaling, and operations of application containers across clusters of hosts, providing container-centric infrastructure.
It addresses all the difficulties mentioned above; it can work well on most cloud providers, bare-metal, hybrids, or a combination of all of the above). It is easily configurable, modular, and does features like auto-placement, auto-restart, auto-replication and auto-healing of containers exceptionally well.

Main components of Kubernetes:

Cluster: A control plane and one or more computing machines, or nodes.

Control plane: The collection of processes that control Kubernetes nodes. This is where all task assignments originate.

Kubelet: This service runs on nodes and reads the container manifests and ensures the defined containers are started and running.

Pod: A group of one or more containers deployed to a single node. All containers in a pod share an IP address, IPC, hostname, and other resources.

These are some of the main reasons we use Kubernetes for building, scaling, deploying, and managing enterprise applications. Above all, it enables us to significantly reduce our infrastructure costs by letting them run multiple applications on a single OS and server. It intelligently packs applications into various containers based on the available resources. It automatically scales the application as per the business needs to drive maximum productivity out of limited resources.

Patients with physical or cognitive disabilities are less likely to receive preventative services, are less satisfied with their care, and incur higher costs than abled patients. Healthcare providers have an opportunity to make their services more accessible, beginning with the information on their websites.

According to the United States Census Bureau, 56.7 million Americans have a disability. Although persons with disabilities make up 19 percent of the U.S. population, they don’t receive the same healthcare quality.

Healthcare providers have an opportunity to make their services more accessible, beginning with the information on their websites. Providers have a long way to go to comply with standards, such as the Affordable Care Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Disabilities cost $400 billion per year in healthcare expenditures
The most common disability involves mobility limitation, which impacts 13 percent of adults. The following graph from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows how many U.S. adults have specific disabilities:

MOBILITY Serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs 13.0% COGNITION Serious difficulty concentrating, remembering 10.6%

INDEPENDENT LIVING difficulties doing errands 6.5%

VISION Blind or severe difficulty seeing 4.6%

SELF-CARE Difficulty dressing or bathing 3.6%

Accessibility isn’t just for users with a disability
Updating your website to be more accessible can also have a positive impact on usability. Necessary improvements like larger font sizes, bigger buttons, and sharper color contrast can improve the overall experience for all users.
Many of the improvements that are explicitly required for screen readers — such as alternative text attributes for images and descriptive links — are considered best practices for SEO.

Why healthcare providers should make digital accessibility a top priority?
Hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare centers should make it as easy as possible for patients with disabilities to engage with them digitally. However, many healthcare providers may not know where to start with digital accessibility and ACA compliance. Since the ACA is a reasonably new regulation and its future is uncertain, providers are often not clear on how to do it. But failure to prioritize accessibility can lead to the following:

• Damage to your reputation when word spreads that you do not adequately accommodate patients with disabilities.

• Lawsuits from legal firms and advocacy groups.

• The inability to comply with the ADA. The ADA can obtain civil penalties of up to $55,000 for the first violation and $110,000 for each subsequent breach.

• Loss of funding from the U.S. government for failing to comply with the ACA or Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act.

• Losing patients to other healthcare providers that can better meet their needs.

What is the future for healthcare providers?
Regardless of future laws or potential lawsuits, making your website accessible now for those with disabilities is a recommended best practice for healthcare organizations – and it prepares you to meet any future legal requirements better.
Not to mention, there’s also an inherent SEO benefit for implementing many accessibility best practices. That’s because accessible content and optimized content are both machine-readable.
So now that we’ve convinced you, what are your next steps?

Review section 508 and WCAG, section A and A.A: Some of the rules have to do with how you provide alternative text, video captions, and audio files transcripts. There are also rules around how you use color and contrast ratios, as well as moving banners and video backgrounds. Some of it you can likely tackle, some of it will need a developer.

Understand how your CMS, design, and content all play a role in accessibility: Some changes you’ll be able to go out and make right away – like changing all those “click here” links. But some could require design changes – or even a new CMS.

Talk with your in-house legal counsel: Get their interpretation of your organization’s current and future liability. They will be a vital source to help you prioritize the next steps.

Talk with your technology partner: Reach out to them for help and guidance. If you’re about to undertake website up-gradation, it’s the perfect time to talk about accessibility.

Challenges in home-based healthcare service providers

Inability to close the demand and supply gap: America is home to an aging population. By 2020, an estimated 17% of the entire community will be 65 or older. That’s 50 million men and women who will be increasing their reliance on the healthcare industry as a whole. Recent AARP survey results show that nearly 90 percent of those over 55 plan to stay in their homes (though roughly 20% will be forced to transfer into nursing homes or assisted living facilities). But that still leaves up to 70% – 35 million people – aging at home and reliant (at least to some degree) on home health care.

Excessive time is spent on documentation: Focusing on paperwork can take away time that could otherwise be well spent with those you serve and their families. One of the ways documentation is hurting the business is in payroll and attendance, aged receivables, patient visit records, and more.

Inability to stay “current” and lack of innovation: The home healthcare industry is in the midst of a technological revolution and is struggling to keep up. Learning how to use new technology effectively takes considerable time and effort. While some of the agencies are quick to adapt, a few are lagging, put off either due to additional cost burden or lack of awareness. Older, outdated systems are being replaced with faster, less-intrusive technology. From home health monitoring systems that integrate with hospital networks to mobile administration units and beyond, technology is expanding at an ever-increasing pace.

Web accessibility is critical for the finance and banking sector to adopt. Banks worldwide are one of the first to embrace web accessibility due strict to regulations. According to a study from the World Bank, it’s estimated that 2 billion people don’t have access to formal financial services. Hence, banks are keen and rightly so to make banking more accessible for people with disabilities around the world. Access to banks, ATMs, online payment gateways, insurance, loans, and other banking services are equally essential to everyone, more so for people with disabilities.

Even if we look at some cases like Bank of America California and Florida Agreement (2000), Best Buy POS Settlement Agreement (2010) or E*Trade Settlement Agreement Amendment (2018) on Lainey Feingold’s website, it is evident that everyone in finance and banking sector will have to adopt web accessibility. It is time for fintech to embrace innovation and accessibility in their product development right from the product inception.

Few questions to ask to ensure Fintech products are thinking accessibility:

Does your potential customer include people with some disability? With a 2 Billion population with some form of disability (15% of the world population!), this is a customer base that you definitely should not ignore!

Have you thought of people with challenges with seeing, hearing, thinking, reach & dexterity & mobility? Learn more about Inclusive Design. Does your product design consider the principles of inclusivity?

Have you considered people with disabilities as an integral part of user testing?

It is time for the finance and banking industry to understand the customer potential and build accessibility as a differentiator in your products.

As software designers and developers, our mission is to build products that can be used by as many people as possible. One of our expertise, therefore, is to develop products with accessibility in mind.

But that is easier said than done. ONE BCG — along with the majority of product development firms — is working ways to operationalizing accessibility into every product that gets built.

Creating a good user experience requires us to think carefully about the diverse needs and devices of our users. It is not hard for a sighted user to visualize how being visually impaired could make using a computer difficult. Just close your eyes, and you will immediately experience that even processing text is impossible.

Now, a range of software is available that can help using a computer for a more comfortable, enjoyable, and productive experience for visually impaired users.

Screen readers

A "screen reader" is the general term for a program that helps blind people use a computer. A screen reader will "read" or "speak" the content of a page to the blind user. Screen readers convert digital text into synthesized speech. They empower users to hear content and navigate with the keyboard.

Screen readers read content differently from humans. The voice may sound somewhat robotic and monotone. It takes time to get used to a screen reader, but once users become accustomed to it, they can race through content at speeds that awe sighted individuals.

What screen reader do we keep in mind when building a website?

The Web Accessibility team at ONE BCG does not code for the screen reader but instead follow the rules by the best practices for web accessibility.

All screen readers share similar functionality and capabilities. However, keyboard shortcuts, voices, and ways of calling out links, images, and so on, vary between them. Since users will be accustomed to their preferred screen reader's conventions, these differences don't typically impact coding practices. The key is to adhere to accessibility standards and generally-accepted accessibility techniques.

The web accessibility team at ONE BCG will test most extensively with JAWS for Windows because it is the most popularly used screen reader (as reported by the WebAIM annual survey(link is external).
The team also tests with Voiceover for Mac and NVDA for Windows, both of which are growing in popularity.
Why it is important to define the language of the document?

Text-to-speech engines, like screen readers, know how to read the text

Spell checkers know what language to use

Text styling

If you do not define the language of the page, the user agent will default to using its default language setting for rendering the page.

If both the page and the user agent are in the same language, everything will work fine. However, if, for instance, the user agent is set up for English and the page is in French, a user agent such as a screen reader will attempt to speak the French text like a bad American tourist.
Layout the code of your page so that if CSS is turned off, the content displays in reading order.

Why is content linearization necessary?

Screen readers don't process CSS, so they read the content in the order it is coded. This can be confusing if the content is not laid out in a logical order. Audio interfaces present content linearly to users, one item at a time. This contrasts with how most people use visual interfaces. Sighted users can scan an entire screen almost instantaneously, comprehending the overall layout, the artistic style, and other macro-level aspects of the content. Screen reader users cannot understand these macro-level aspects as quickly.

How does site hierarchy & navigation matter?

The term "sitemap" refers to two things. First, it means the hierarchical arrangement of pages on a website. A visitor may start on a home page and go deeper through a series of menus to drill down to a particular page they are looking for. If the site hierarchy makes sense, this process should be accessible on a screen reader. If not, the desired page may never be found.

Second, "sitemap" refers to an actual page that lists other pages on a site. A user may visit this page if they prefer to see all pages on a site at once, rather than clicking through progressively more targeted pages to reach their desired goal. Ideally, the sitemap page should reflect the hierarchy around which a site is organized; a sitemap page should have headings and structure to make it a helpful list.

Menus & navigation

Menus are a list of links that allow the user to navigate hierarchically through a website. In most websites, a primary menu will be at the top of a desktop version of a site, and a local menu will be on the left or (less frequently) right sidebar. In mobile websites, menus are often hidden behind icons or located within dropdown lists. Footers and headers often contain additional menus for utility links.
Menus are how a user becomes aware of a site's hierarchy. Menus can also provide shortcuts to frequently-accessed pages that are otherwise buried deep within a sitemap. Getting menus correct so that a website can be navigated is one of the most important aspects of usability.

How screen readers read the content?

Screen readers pause for periods, semicolon, commas, question marks, exclamation, paragraph ending.

Screen readers read letters out loud as you type them, but say "star" or "asterisk" for password fields.

Screen readers announce the page title (the
element in the HTML markup) when first loading a web page.

Screen readers will read the alternative text of images if alt text is present. JAWS precedes the alternative text with the word "graphic." If the image is a link, JAWS precedes the alternative text with a "graphic link."

Screen readers ignore images without alternative text and say nothing, but users can set their preferences to read the file name.

If an image without alternative text is a link, screen readers will generally read the link destination (the href attribute in the HTML markup) or may read the image file name.

Screen readers announce headings and identify the heading level. NVDA and JAWS, for example, precede
headings with "heading level 1."

Some screen readers announce the number of links on a page as soon as the page finishes loading in the browser.

JAWS says "same page link" if the link destination is on the same page as the link itself and "visited link" for links that are previously accessed.

Screen readers in table navigation mode inform the user how many rows and columns are in a data table.

Users can navigate in any direction from cell to cell in table navigation mode. If the table is marked up correctly, the screen reader will read the column and/or row heading as the user enters each new cell.

Screen readers inform users when they have entered into a form. Users have the option to enter form navigation mode.

Screen readers can be thrown off by homographs. For example, the word read can be pronounced "reed" or "red," depending on the context: "I'm going to read the newspaper" vs. "I already read the newspaper." A sentence such as "I read the newspaper every day" is ambiguous to all readers—humans and screen readers alike.

Screen readers may or may not read out punctuation, depending on the user's verbosity setting. Ensure that you convey the intended meaning in either case.

Given the increasing emphasis on digitization, we no longer need to make a case on the importance of web applications. What is more important is to reach out to the target audience in a way that they can relate to you.

Why are multilingual applications so critical?
Why should you care so much about building a multilingual application the right way?

First, it helps you increase your visibility and attract as many global visitors as possible. Being searchable in different languages is critical when you are going global.

Secondly, you want to turn all these potential visiting customers into real customers and repeat purchasers. That's why offering a seamless and optimized flow in your customers' language is so important.

Localization of content
Any application should go beyond just translating the words. There is a need to think of altering the values, presentation, and etiquette and, in some cases, user interfaces, and much more. It should deliver a superior user experience while making the content appear intuitive and interactive.
Moreover, language translation in the multilingual application should also be seen as tailoring the content to both a technical and cultural perspective.

Timeframes and Geography
Language interpretations have a lot to do with geographic boundaries and distances, we need to consider several variations of the same content. The difficulties in this particular event may include switching to different time zone, integrating confined places, and synchronizing with other cultural rituals that encircle respective target society. Eventually, what users experience in the multilingual application should be composed of local material instead of universal essence.

Design changes
An ideal design allows content to look pleasing, clear, and easily absorbable, particularly when the app is translated into different languages. As translation and resultant text style also affect the layout of the interface, it is essential to retain the original aesthetics and ensure that its look and feel still remain intuitive, engaging, and easy-to-explore.

Multilingual mobile app development entails a range of changes and improvements on the original app content, one of which is its design architecture. To suit the needs of local users, it is mandatory to perform specific changes to the user interface.

Solutions to alleviate Multilingual App Challenges:

1. Leave plenty of space: It is advisable to avoid using traditional practices of writing since other languages may require more space than plain English. Instead, you can prefer to use adequate space to adjust for changeable increases and to avoid future errors and performance speed.

2. Make wise choices: In Multilingual application development, it is essential to choose the icons wisely to avoid any misinterpretations for people living in different regions.

3. Plan in advance: To achieve a better product, we schedule the testing and translation of the content long before the launch.

4. Testing: We test the localization software as rigorously as possible when we use machine translation for multilingual website application creation.

5. Proper usage of strings: It is a best practice to manage your strings using Unicode/UTF-8 encoding. This approach saves extra time by saving on conversion steps, debugging, and error correction.

6. Internationalization of software: By internationalizing the multilingual software, you can make dates, numbers and figures, currencies, and other data appear in a convincing, familiar, and convenient way to the users.

7. Full localization support: The software you use for multilingual app development should better support the country code and the different variations of spelling, date formats, currencies, and other elements of native countries.

Coping with change.

COVID-19. We are learning new ways and getting better every day. We have not seen anything like this before. As circumstances change, cities have come to a standstill, routines have changed and new ways of collaborating are emerging.

There are three things we are doing to navigate this environment.

Stay informed. Take the pulse of the current landscape and technology demand to understand the needs of our customers.

Prevalent and transparent. Customers are looking for information and trust in us to deliver, so we make sure we proactively communicate.

Connect in real-time. As consumer behavior shifts, we are making sure our services and product information is up to date across all channels and communications to ensure we’re striking the right tone.

In this challenging time, people are looking to companies for preparedness. Through the uncertainty, the primary thing customers want from us is relevant and up-to-date information. Being there in these important moments with useful information will help ensure we’re delivering the assistance you need.

Staying connected.

As social distancing continues, we, at ONE BCG, our coworkers, and our customers are turning to online video calls to adapt, cope, and stay like a community.

To combat the feelings, of fear, anxiety, and loneliness here are some things we are suggesting our people stay positive and healthy.

Create a routine. This may help bring order and purpose to daily tasks. Be sure to include activities such as exercise, eating healthy, meditating, and other healthy pastimes.

Stay connected virtually. Phone or video call a friend or family member during this social isolation. Having a conversation and staying connected could help relieve sad or anxious feelings.

Get online. Social media sites can make it easy to reconnect with old friends or make new ones. Research has shown that having a lot of friends in your social network may make you feel more supported and could result in less stress. But choose your time and frequency carefully.

Learn something new. Find a topic or skill of interest, take an online course, and upgrade your skill, invest time in learning new skills, and stay ahead.

Stay positive. Discuss experiences and feelings with loved ones, keep a daily gratitude journal, and practice mindfulness and relaxation exercises.

Our guiding principle as a brand, particularly at this moment, is to be helpful. And as people turn to technology for information and connection in these times of need, we’re mindful that we can be more helpful today than they were even yesterday.

If you’ve been operating for any length of time, you know that dealing with chargebacks is one of the most frustrating aspects of running a nightclub. Basically intended as a consumer protection measure, chargebacks can now affect your business adversely and cost you a lot of money, time, and effort.

Chargebacks are an inevitable part of running a business that you’ll have to deal with sooner or later. For most of the businesses, chargebacks will only be occasional trouble. For others, a high chargeback rate can lead to being listed as a “high-risk merchant”. While we can’t make your business chargeback-proof, we can help you to reduce the chargeback incidents and suggest a few tips on dealing with them when they unavoidably happen.

This article will give you a thorough background on what chargebacks are, why they happen, and how to deal with them particularly in pubs, bars, and nightclubs. We’ll also discuss the many steps you can take to lessen the number of chargebacks you’ll incur when running your business.

What is a chargeback?

A chargeback occurs when a customer contacts their credit card issuer or bank and disputes a charge on their account, and requests a refund.

It typically occurs when they recognize a charge on their account that they don't recognize or are unhappy with.

Reasons for chargeback in Hospitality

Chargebacks can occur for a wide variety of reasons in pubs and nightclubs. Most of the reasons will fall into one of the following broad categories:
(1) Clerical error
(2) Service dissatisfaction
(3) Friendly fraud.

Here are just a few examples of the possible reasons you might experience a chargeback:

Clerical Or Technical Error
Between you, your merchant services provider, and the customer’s issuing bank, there are plenty of opportunities for someone to make an honest mistake or for a technical glitch. These kinds of errors include the following:

Expired credit or debit card

Duplicate billing

Incorrect amount billed

Refund authorized but never credited back to the customer

Issuing bank error

Customer Dissatisfaction
Sometimes If the customer isn’t happy with how your services turned out, they might request a chargeback without contacting you first. Customers can be dissatisfied for any number of reasons. Here are some of the more common ones:

Services not as described, poor quality, etc.

Item ordered were not served

The customer attempted to discuss poor service but claims to have been refused

The customer doesn’t recall authorizing the transaction

Fraud
Fraudulent transactions account for well over 50% of all chargebacks and are a common source of inconvenience to merchants and customers alike. Fraud can take one of three forms:

Fraud on the part of the customer - claiming not to have used the service when they actually did.

Fraud on the part of a third party - the card was stolen, or cardholder data was obtained illegally.

Fraud on the part of the merchant - using the customer’s card data to make additional, unauthorized transactions.

Note that chargeback policies and procedures are primarily designed to protect consumers from this type of fraud.

How does the Chargeback resolution process work?

Regardless of the issuing bank or credit card association that sponsored the card involved in the dispute, every chargeback is investigated and resolved following a standardized process.

Customer: The customer requests a refund from the issuing bank to initiate the chargeback resolution process.

Issuing bank: Based upon evidence provided by the customer the issuing bank will review the circumstances surrounding the disputed transaction. The issuing bank then files a reason code to categorize the assumed reason for the chargeback.

Processing bank: The merchant’s processor reviews the chargeback. If the processor has evidence that the chargeback is not valid, it will act on the merchant’s behalf to invalidate it. Otherwise, it will levy the chargeback fee and pass along all the information it has to the merchant.

Merchant review: The merchant/you now have the opportunity to review the chargeback and present any additional evidence that could affect the outcome. Note that this is usually the first time in the chargeback resolution process that you will be informed of the circumstances surrounding the chargeback.

Re-presentment: The processor re-presents the chargeback based upon any additional evidence offered by the merchant.

Final decision: The issuing bank reviews all evidence presented and issues a final decision. If the chargeback is invalidated, funds are returned to the merchant. Most processors, however, will not refund the chargeback fee even in cases where the merchant prevails in this process.

Preventing Chargebacks in Nightclubs and Pubs

Excellent customer service: Many chargebacks can be easily avoided, or even rectified if there is open communication between the consumer and you. This works both ways: consumers should always at least attempt to resolve the situation through communication with the merchant before resorting to requesting a chargeback. This step is particularly important in nightclubs and pubs.

Confirm the expiration date of all credit/debit cards: Instruct your staff that they should never accept an expired card. Get the customer’s signature for magstripe-only cards.

Provide your contact details on every possible channel: Card processing errors can easily be fixed by providing consumers with your contact information, whether on the receipt or on your website, so they can reach you directly and have the error corrected without initiating a chargeback.

Optimize your billing descriptor: Chargebacks often can be a matter of a misunderstanding, specifically because the consumer is unclear about the transaction details that appear on their credit card statement. Be sure to let the consumer know what business name will appear on their statement.

Precautions to take

Keep detailed records of all transactions: Chargeback fraud by consumers is becoming more common all the time. It’s all too easy to make a transaction and then report it as a fraudulent transaction to the issuing bank. On many occasions, these cases are lost by the merchant for a lack of providing simple and clean records.

Ensure your sales receipts are complete and legible: They can be clearly understood by the consumer, as well as a valid piece of proof during a chargeback dispute. A clean receipt should be the first step in fighting a chargeback.

Save all ID card information: We recommend that you retain their receipts and ID card records in an organized fashion, so you can quickly and accurately provide information upon request.

Always respond to retrieval requests: A retrieval request, also known as soft chargeback, occurs when a credit card issuer asks a merchant for the details of a transaction to validate it. Make sure these requests are responded to promptly.

Responding to chargebacks

In an ideal scenario, you’d be able to respond to credit card chargebacks alone. You could respond with your rebuttal letter, provide your evidence, and wait optimistically for a win.
The chargeback process is cumbersome, slow, and difficult to navigate. You need to have the right solutions in place. An end to end chargeback response platform works for you to represent chargebacks. It helps you to collect data and information about customers and provides you the tools you need to correctly respond to credit card chargebacks. You need real solutions and experts working for and with you to help provide exactly what your business needs.

In a perfect business environment, you’d be able to take preventive measures that will shield you from having to deal with chargebacks. Unfortunately, they’re now an inevitable part of running a restaurant business.

For some of the merchants, a chargeback may be an occasional occurrence. For a few, it is highly risky because a high chargeback rate can lead to the account being frozen or being listed as a high-risk merchant. While a business cannot be made chargeback proof, we can help you manage the occurrences and assist you in understanding how to deal with them when they occur.

In the previous article, you learned about the various types of frauds and what leads to chargeback. In this article, we’ll discuss the many steps you can take to lessen the number of a chargeback you’ll incur and how to deal with filed chargebacks.

Chargeback resolution for restaurants

There is a standardized process followed to investigate every chargeback irrespective of the issuing bank or credit card provider of the card in dispute.

This process consists of the following steps:

Initial filing: In most of the cases, the customer must request a refund from the issuing bank to initiate the chargeback resolution process.

Review: Based on the information provided by the customer, the issuing bank will review the disputed transaction and file a reason code. This will categorize the assumed reason for the chargeback. The customer has the benefit of the doubt, and the issuing bank mostly assumes the customer is telling the truth.

Investigation: The issuing bank investigates available pieces of evidence and decides whether the claim is valid. Based on the evidence, it issues a credit to the customer and removes the disputed funds from the merchant’s bank account. But the decision is not final yet.

Processor evaluation: The merchant's processor evaluates the chargeback issue. If the evidence proves that the chargeback is not valid, it will act on the merchant's behalf to invalidate it. Otherwise, chargeback fees will be passed along with all the information they have received to the merchant.

Merchant review: Now, it’s your turn to review the chargeback and decide to contest the chargeback. Review the chargeback, gather all the evidence to contest. This is the first time in the whole process you will be notified.

Contest: The processor re-presents the chargeback based upon any additional evidence offered by the merchant. The evidence can be the invoice with time and date stamp, any ID card presented during the transaction, credit card information, or anything else.

Final decision: The issuing bank reviews all evidence presented and issues a final decision. If the chargeback is invalidated, funds are returned to the merchant.

Chargeback resolution for restaurants

Every chargeback is investigated and resolved following a standardized process, regardless of the issuing bank or credit card association that sponsored the card involved in the dispute.

This process consists of the following steps:

Preventing Chargebacks in restaurants

The chargeback resolution process is designed to work in favor of consumers, but it’s not entirely unfair. Your safest bet is to avoid getting into this circumstance in the first place.
Here are some tips that can help you prevent chargebacks from happening:

Service: 4% of chargebacks occur because the product did not meet a guest's expectations. If you notice an unhappy guest or receive a complaint, open up the lines of communication and try to quickly resolve the issue before a diner gets to their card statement to deny a transaction. If you think the guest would win a chargeback, offer a refund or a partial refund. In either scenario, a refund is cheaper than a chargeback.

Gather evidence: Capturing customer information is the best way to prevent chargebacks. The restaurants do not adopt the best practices to capture and record customer Identity cards. The best way to go about this is with a time-efficient, automated, ID scan machine to capture credit card and USDL.

Communicate with your customers: Many chargebacks can be easily avoided or even rectified if there is open communication between the consumer and the merchant. This works both ways: consumers should always at least attempt to resolve the situation through communication with the merchant before resorting to requesting a chargeback.

Save all receipts: The statute of limitations for issuing chargebacks vary from provider to provider. However, it can be anywhere from 180 days to three years following a transaction. We recommend that merchants retain their receipts and records in an organized fashion, so they can quickly and accurately provide information upon request.

Follow card processing protocols: Chargebacks can often be prevented by strictly following basic credit/debit card processing protocols. If a card is swiped or dipped and authorization is denied, do not try to run the card a second time. Swiping or dipping multiple times in an effort to authorize a transaction, manually keying in an entry, or calling for credit approval can all result in a chargeback.

Responding to Chargebacks

When responding to a chargeback, it’s necessary that you act as immediately. There is a time limit in each step of the chargeback resolution process, and delayed action on your part can result in a chargeback loss. Remember that you’re already starting behind the power curve, as you will be the last party involved in a chargeback to receive notice that it has occurred.

A quick response can also resolve consumer misunderstandings. For example, if a customer says he or she never received credit for a return, you can quickly provide proof of the specific day the credit was issued. This action can resolve a chargeback in your favor or even prevent one from being filed if you can communicate with the customer before they resort to filing a chargeback.

While we recommend responding quickly to all chargebacks, we don’t believe you should fight every chargeback. Save your efforts for the situations where you know you can prevail and have the evidence to prove your case.

Using chargeback management platforms

More and more businesses are embracing chargeback management platforms to contest chargebacks. These systems increase operational efficiency in restaurants and eliminate various issues that lead to chargebacks while making it easier to respond.

Chargeback frauds in restaurants- Part 1

Fraud is common in restaurants. Why? Large staffs with multiple people who have access to systems/register run a risk. Combine this with multiple shifts and high employee turnover, the owner can’t be there every second of the day to prevent restaurant fraud.

Chargeback statistics reveal alarming numbers

Any business that accepts credit or debit cards as payment—or is considering accepting these forms of payment—should be aware of how chargebacks impact their business. These statistics reveal how consumer shopping has changed dramatically over the past few decades as well as how the chargeback process has not kept up with these changes. Most importantly, by taking a look at chargeback statistics, you can see how the chargebacks themselves often result in unintended consequences for high-risk merchants. Let's take a closer look at chargebacks.

Chargeback statistics restaurant owners need to know

Also notable is that 86% of all chargebacks are probable cases of friendly fraud, and merchants lose $2.40 for every dollar of chargeback fraud. In total, fraud costs the average merchant 1.47% of their total revenue. If these stats don't provide a clear enough picture of how fraudulent chargebacks can impact your business, check out the stats below:

81% of customers freely admit to filing a chargeback out of convenience. Most customers can’t see any difference between a chargeback and a standard return. They either don’t know—or don’t care—about how a chargeback negatively impacts merchants.

A customer who successfully files a chargeback is nine times more likely to file another one, and 40% of customers who file a chargeback will file another one within 60 days.

Merchants only hear from 4% of dissatisfied customers, and only 1 in 20 customers will call and complain if there is an issue with their order. The remaining 19 are at risk of filing a chargeback.

Chargebacks increase by 41% every two years. The issue will only get worse as the problem spreads to other markets like the EU, Japan, and China. The financial impact of chargebacks will reach close to $30 billion by 2020.

Types of Chargebacks in Restaurants

Merchant errors: This is a grey area of chargebacks. Neither the customer nor the merchant is at fault for this chargeback, one believes that the other has made an error. For instance, a customer may request a chargeback when they believe they didn’t authorize a transaction or have a disagreement on a dish’s price.

Criminal fraud: Just as it sounds – criminal. This occurs when fraudulent credit cards are used, or when wait staff applies a larger tip to a bill that has already been signed off on by the customer.

Accidental friendly fraud: These chargebacks occur on the customer end of the chargeback. Accidental friendly fraud is when a consumer authorized a purchase but files a chargeback without realizing they are responsible for the purchase. For example, a child may be verbally authorized to use their parent’s credit card. When the bill arrives, the parent may dispute the charge, assuming it’s a fraud.

Intentional friendly fraud: This is much more malicious, a customer may have buyer’s remorse and dispute the charge with the hopes of a refund. This is most commonly found in night clubs and restaurants where the spending is high.

Fighting Chargebacks – Now easier than ever before

The risk of chargebacks and friendly fraud is real, which is why you need a service provider who is fighting in your corner to protect your business. ONE BCG has chargeback prevention methods in place and can help you identify potential fraud, implement and maintain business best practices, gather evidence, and dispute chargebacks. With our first-class chargeback management services, we have helped businesses just like yours.

Why you shouldn’t accept chargeback as a cost of doing business?

Most of the restaurant owners are incredibly busy with operations, the thought of gathering the evidence, writing up an explanation and going through a pile of receipts to fight a chargeback seems time-consuming. It feels like a task since you do not know if you can win the chargeback contested.

But letting chargebacks go—particularly when they’re unwarranted—can be a serious mistake, especially in the long run. Choosing not to fight an illegitimate chargeback can lead to:

Significant loss of revenue over time

A poor reputation among payment providers

Repeated instances of fraud

Higher-cost payment processing

Penalties for failing to acknowledge chargebacks

Recognizing fake IDs and preventing underage patrons at the entrance has always been a struggle for bars and nightclubs. But thanks to new ID scanning systems, that fight has become more comfortable.

Managers need to understand that the fake IDs of today are so sophisticated and so good that it's almost impossible for the human eye to catch a fake ID. ID scanning systems also eliminate any lingering doubt that an ID is real or fake. It also helps you save the information of the patron.

Scanners go beyond security.

Chargebacks occur when a customer disputes a charge on a card. The customer contacts his/her card issuer and initiates the process through your payment processor. Your processor will likely charge you a fee for each chargeback you receive. You often have the right to fight the dispute in a process called representment, where you must substantiate the charge by providing verification of the sale. Generally, if you cannot confirm the transaction, you will have to reimburse the customer.

Chargebacks can be costly, time-consuming, and can threaten your merchant account. Depending on the card type, chargeback rates exceeding 0.5% or 1.0% (by sale count) can result in substantial fines. Also, excessive rates can cause your merchant account to be terminated with the possibility of card brand banishment. Even a small number of chargebacks demonstrates that you have some unhappy customers.

Use of scanners to scan, verify, and save records of Driving licenses: Use ID scan devices or mobile application to scan the USDL, capture customer information in reports, and save the image of the USDL. Capturing the USDL details not only helps you in fulfilling the legal formalities but also go a long way in helping you provide real evidence in case of discrepancies.

Use mobile applications for a friendly interaction: Avoid buyer hesitance to get scanned on a kiosk. You can provide a pleasant patron experience by going to the customer. This way, the billing process is faster, the patron will remain comfortable, relaxed, and likely to more time and money because of the excellent customer experience.

Timestamp your interactions: When you capture the details of the patron, the communication is time stamped. You can capture the time patron used the credit card. This helps you in proving that the transaction in question, was made at a particular time and place.

Photo capture the patron's ID: As soon as you scan the ID card, the scanner automatically captures the image of the driving license and the credit card and saves the information. Both back and the front side of the license can be captured and stored.

Common mistakes restaurants make and how to avoid them

Chargebacks are expensive and a complex problem. They impact all kinds of merchants and all sizes of businesses. Frauds in hospitality businesses due to buyer's remorse. There are two main types of chargebacks, genuine fraud chargebacks occur when the transaction was not made by the cardholder, as in a case of identity theft. Friendly fraud chargebacks happen when a cardholder disputes a charge that s/he did authorize claiming fraud and is also known as "I didn't buy that" fraud or due to buyers' remorse. There are also non-fraud chargebacks, which are purchases made intentionally by cardholders and then disputed under a claim (e.g., they never visited the restaurant)

The fact is, in either case, the chargeback dispute process does not favor merchants. Banks and credit card companies require very little proof from consumers to validate a dispute claim. Here are some mistakes merchants can make:

Not fightback: Chargebacks were a $31 billion problem in 2017 — a burden that extends far beyond the liability for disputed transactions. Not taking action means losing 100% of the money and can result in a significant revenue loss when ignored and a compromise on the reputation. Every chargeback needs to be carefully analyzed, presented with evidence, and you can challenge the ones that are more likely to result in a win.

Service compromise: 4% of chargebacks occur because the product did not meet a guest's expectations.

Increasing costs: Fighting chargebacks takes time, expertise, and manpower. A recent Javelin study reports that fraud and chargeback management consumes between 13% and 20% of the operational budget. Resource allocation is also a significant concern for merchants. Small and large merchants alike can benefit from working with a representment partner, enabling them to focus on their core business and let trained experts do the heavy lifting.

Not saving the right evidence: Capturing customer information is the best way to prevent chargebacks. The restaurants do not adopt the best practices to capture and record customer Identity cards. However, the best way to go about this is with a time-efficient, automated, and preferably mobile solution.

Access to reliable chargeback data is limited. Nevertheless, even confined data clearly shows how the merchants in the hospitality industry pay the price.

Effectively fighting chargeback fraud requires training. Merchants need reliable information identifying where fraud is coming from, and a thorough understanding of how to respond to chargeback frauds. The industry is going through radical change to serve as a basis for long-term, positive change.
